Calculate your shift

Example: 10 PM to 6 AM with a 30-minute unpaid break. Change the times to match your shift.

Work time after unpaid breaks7 hours 30 minutes

7.50 decimal hours · Ends the next day

480 minutes in the shift − 30 unpaid break minutes = 450 work minutes

An end time earlier than the start time means the next day. Uses clock times for shifts under 24 hours; it does not adjust for daylight-saving clock changes.

How to calculate hours across midnight

Count from your start time to midnight, add the time from midnight to your finish, then subtract unpaid breaks. For a 10 PM to 6 AM shift, that is 2 hours before midnight plus 6 hours after midnight: 8 hours before breaks.

Work time = time before midnight + time after midnight − unpaid breaks.

With a 30-minute unpaid break, that shift totals 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.

Questions about night-shift hours

Is 10 PM to 6 AM an eight-hour shift?

Yes, before unpaid breaks. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid break leaves 7 hours 30 minutes. Enter only unpaid break time; don’t subtract paid breaks.

Why is 7 hours 30 minutes shown as 7.50?

Thirty minutes is half an hour: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5. Add that to the seven whole hours. See our minutes-to-decimal-hours conversion table for more examples.

Which day should I record an overnight shift on?

Workpindle’s weekly timesheet records a shift on its start date, even if it finishes the following morning. If your employer uses a different reporting convention, follow their instructions when submitting hours.

What happens when clocks change?

This tool uses the times on the clock and has no date or time-zone input. When a daylight-saving change happens during a shift, elapsed time can differ from the result. Check the actual elapsed time using dated records for that shift.

Can I calculate a full week or multiple jobs?

Yes. Use the free weekly timesheet calculator to add several shifts, enter hourly rates, and download a CSV. The two-job tracking guide explains how to keep each job’s hours and rate separate. Estimated pay does not automatically include overtime premiums or taxes.
